Detroit Free Press: DoE awards $1.3 million to U-M to train next generation of nuclear scientists

The University of Michigan has been awarded $1.3 million to train a new generation of nuclear scientists, the U.S. Department of Energy announced on April 8.

An estimated $830,000 will be used for research on how new reactor designs and technologies can have wider applications, while $465,000 will go to graduate fellowships and $20,000 for four undergraduate scholarships for students who are planning careers in nuclear energy.

“We are pleased that these U.S. Department of Energy awards recognize the importance of nuclear energy as a carbon-free source of electricity. These fellowship and scholarship funds will be crucial in supporting the education of future generations of nuclear engineers,” said Ronald Gilgenbach, chair of U-M’s Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences Department.
