Professor Saitou received a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from MIT in 1996, and has since worked as a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan, working in the areas of computational design synthesis, mechanical/industrial systems and biomedical systems. He has received awards from the Design Engineering Division of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Local Motors and ARPA-E, and the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers for his work in design optimization and innovative design.

Research Interests: 
Professor Saitou’s research focuses on algorithmic and optimal synthesis of products and systems with applications ranging from automotive structures and solar concentrator systems to medical imaging equipment and biological molecules.
