About the Third Century Initiative

The Third Century Initiative (TCI) is a highly competitive $50 million, five-year funded research program to develop innovative, multi-disciplinary approaches to teaching and addressing global challenges. Initiated by the University of Michigan President and Provost, TCI’s goal is to stimulate creative thinking about how to intensify learning experiences in and beyond the classroom, and how to approach some of the foremost challenges facing our world. As the University approaches its bicentennial in 2017, TCI will provide researchers and students the freedom to tackle real problems, learn immersively and together, and continue the University’s proud tradition of research leadership and excellence.

REFRESCH is funded through the Global Challenges component of the Third Century Initiative. Global Challenges grants draw upon the University’s unparalleled breadth of expertise to address large, complex challenges that impact many people. The program embraces risk-taking, multidisciplinary approaches, and engagement with the entire internal and external UM community, including students. Projects are particularly encouraged to demonstrate a scalable and transferable (e.g. local to global) impact. REFRESCH is one of only three grants to move through the Phase II funding process of Global Challenges.
