Energy Rebound Effect of Connected & Automated Vehicles

On Thursday December 5, associate professor Ming Xu will give a talk on how future connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) might “backfire” in terms of energy consumption. Modeling studies by Xu and his doctoral student Morteza Taiebat show that even though CAVs offer efficiency gains, the resulting convenience and personal time savings can lead to increased travel, potentially undermining the promised environmental benefits.

Xu and Taiebat, both from the School for Environment & Sustainability (SEAS) and the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering (CEE), will present their analysis at the Next Generation Transportation Systems (NGTS) Seminar to be held 2:30 – 4:00 pm December 5 in 2029 G.G. Brown.
