Cheryl L. Bynum is a senior manager with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, where she directs the U.S. government’s innovative partnership with the freight industry, SmartWay™ Transport. Working with thousands of carriers, businesses and other stakeholders across the United States and Canada, SmartWay provides business data, assessment tools and methods, and incentives to improve the economic, energy and environmental sustainability of goods movement. The program serves as a model for other nations including Mexico, Chile, Argentina, China and Brazil. Prior to assuming her current role, Cheryl developed and led the technology verification program for SmartWay. She has diverse experience in freight transportation, having held positions with an ocean-going carrier, a port cargo agent, and intermodal truck and rail carriers. Cheryl is a graduate of the University of Michigan, and lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
